I beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for War what was the strength of the Regular Army, Army Reserve, and Militia together, on the 1st day of January 1889, as compared.with the numbers on the 1st day of January 1895?

The numbers of the effective non-commissioned officers and men on the dates mentioned are as follows:—1st January 1895, Regular Army, 213,555; Army Reserve, 82,804: Militia, 112,541; total, 408,900. 1st January 1899, Regular Armv, 222,373; Army Reserve, 78,798; Militia, 107,753; total, 408,924.
