HC Deb 22 June 1899 vol 73 cc277-8
MR. T. M. HEALY (Louth, N.)

I beg to ask Mr. Attorney-General for Ireland whether his attention has been called to the case of a contractor under the Louth County Council, in the Carlingford Division, persisting in acting as a district councillor in the division in which his contract subsists; is this lawful; and, if not, do the Government propose themselves to prosecute for such offences as in all other cases, or is it to be left to private prosecutors; and, if so, why is a departure from the usual Irish practice in respect of offences to be made.

THE ATTORNEY-GENERAL FOR IRELAND (Mr. ATKINSON,) Londonderry, N.

The practice up to now has been not to institute a prosecution in cases of this kind which arose under the Poor Law at the expense of the Crown. But the whole matter is under the consideration of the Government, and I would ask the hon. Member to postpone his question for a week.
