HC Deb 09 June 1899 vol 72 cc769-70
MR. M'GHEE (Louth, S.)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether his attention has been called to the report of the proceedings at the coroner's inquest held at the Blackburn Arms, Garston, upon the dead body of a dock labourer, named Peter Mallor, who had been in the employ of the London and North-Western Railway Company, and assisting to load a steamer called the "Emerald," when he was killed by the falling on his head of a drum laden with caustic soda; is he aware that the coroner reflected severely upon the employment of mere boys by this railway company at the time upon the "Emerald"; and whether the hooks carrying the drum were defective, and had not previously been examined by any competent inspector; and if, in the interests of the lives of the dock labourers and youths employed by this railway company, he will cause full inquiry to be made into the case, and surrounding circumstances.

*SIR M. WHITE RIDLEY

My attention has been called to the report of this case, and to the remarks made by the coroner. The matter is now being further investigated by officers of the Factory Department.
