TENNANT (Berwickshire)I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether his attention has been called to the case of George Burnam, who recently received fatal injuries while shifting a bogie along some rails at Messrs. Cammell's works, Sheffield; and, whether, in view of the rider added by the coroner's jury to their verdict of accidental death, which was to the effect that there was not sufficient room at the sides of the line for the men to work in safety, he will consider the advisability of issuing at an early date special rules embodying the recommendations of the Dangerous Trades Committee, which apply to the use of locomotives in factories.
§ SIR M. WHITE RIDLEYI am making inquiries into the case referred to. As regards the second paragraph of the question, the dangers attending the use of locomotives in factories seem to be closely connected with the questions which have been referred to the Royal Commission on Accidents to the Servants of Railway Companies and Truck Owners, and I must await the Report of the Commission before deciding as to the issue of special rules on the subject. In the meantime the factory inspectors will do their best to secure improvement of the conditions where possible.
