HC Deb 20 February 1899 vol 66 c1447
MR. STEVENSON (Suffolk, Eye)

I beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether the attention of Her Majesty's Government has been directed to the orders of the Sublime Porte to the provincial governors in Asiatic Turkey, closing several orphanages and schools opened and supported by British and American societies for the benefit of the Armenian population; and whether the Secretary of State will take steps to obtain the revocation of any orders restricting philanthropic efforts of that description in Asiatic Turkey?

MR. BRODRICK

Her Majesty's Government have not received any information with regard to those reported orders of the Sublime Porte. But their attention has been called to the matter, and Her Majesty's Ambassador at Constantinople will be requested to report. Sir N. O'Conor may be trusted to do all that is in his power to dissuade the Turkish Government from any steps of the kind.
