HC Deb 09 February 1899 vol 66 c323
MR. HOGAN

I beg to ask the Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, whether he has received an official report in connection with recent disturbances in Samoa; and whether the popular desire that Mataafa should be the future King will be formally recognised by the Berlin Treaty Powers?

MR. BRODRICK

An imperfect telegraphic report only has been received from Her Majesty's Consul in Samoa with regard to the recent disturbances there. Her Majesty's Government must await the arrival of the Consul's despatches containing full information before taking action or expressing any opinion on the subject.
