HC Deb 08 August 1899 vol 76 c165
MR. J. H. ROBERTS

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he is aware of the great interest taken by the Welsh-speaking population of Wales in the recently-published Report of the Royal Commission on Liquor Licensing Laws; and whether ho will authorise a translation of the Report into the Welsh language, or a translation of those portions of the Report which contain the recommendations together with certain additional necessary matter impartially selected.

THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE HOME DEPARTMENT (Sir M. WHITE RIDLEY,) Lancashire, Blackpool

I have seen the Chairman of the Commission, and after considering the matter carefully, I am afraid I must say that I cannot see my way to adopting the suggestion of the hon. Member. I do not think that portions only of the Report could usefully be translated, nor would any portions be satisfactory without the evidence, and to translate the whole would involve an expense which I should riot feel justified in asking the Treasury to allow.
