HC Deb 28 April 1899 vol 70 c823
MR. T. BAYLEY (Derbyshire, Chesterfield)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether the responsible Government of the Cape Colony asked Her Majesty's Government for any increase in its military forces in South Africa to defend the possessions of Her Majesty against possible attack?

THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE COLONIES

No, Sir; the Cape Government did not ask Her Majesty's Government for any increase in the military forces in South Africa, but the intention to increase the garrison was communicated to them, and they were willing to provide, temporarily, barrack accommodation.
