HC Deb 25 April 1899 vol 70 c515
MR. JOHNSTON (Belfast, S.)

On this, the 300th anniversary of his birth, and honouring the memory of the great Lord Protector, I beg to ask the First Commissioner of Works if he can state the present condition of the statue of Oliver Cromwell, Lord Protector, which has been presented to the nation by the munificence of a private donor, and at what date, and on what site, it will be erected in. Westminster?

MR. W. REDMOND (Clare, E.)

Befere the right honourable Gentleman answers that Question may I ask whether there is any precedent for granting a site in the vicinity of this House for the erection of a statue to a murderer?

THE FIRST COMMISSIONER OF WORKS (Mr. AKERS DOUGLAS, Kent, St. Augustine's)

I understand that the statue of Oliver Cromwell which has been promised to the nation by a private donor is advancing towards completion; but I am unable to say when it will be finished. The site selected by my predecessor in the Westminster Hall Garden will be adhered to.
