HC Deb 20 April 1899 vol 70 c51
MR. F. STEVENSON (Suffolk, Eye)

I beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs why the British Vice-Consulates at Bitlis and at Diarbekir have been allowed to remain vacant; and whether the Secretary of State is able to give an assurance that steps will be taken to fill these posts without delay?

MR. BRODRICK

The Vice-Consulates at Bitlis and Diarbekir have been left temporarily vacant at a time of year when it was not anticipated that any inconvenience would arise, the dragomans remaining in charge. Mr. Vice-Consul Jenes has recently been appointed to the Diarbekir Vice-Consulate, and whenever the necessary arrangements can be made the Bitlis post will be filled up.
