HC Deb 14 April 1899 vol 69 cc1137-8
MR. C. M'ARTHUR (Liverpool, Exchange)

I beg to ask 'Mr. Attorney-General whether he is aware that the Archbishop of Canterbury has intimated that at the forthcoming hearing of Ritual cases at Lambeth the Archbishops will decide questions referred to them independently of the decisions of the Privy Council; and whether there is any obligation devolving upon the Archbishops in the exercise of an autho- rity which is derived from the rubrical directions of the Book of Common Prayer to respect the judgments of the Final Court of Appeal in ecclesiastical matters?

THE ATTORNEY-GENERAL (Sir R. WEBSTER (Isle of Wight)

I am not aware of any such intention as that suggested in the first paragraph. I have no reason to doubt that in any decision which may be arrived at, due regard will be given to the previous decisions bearing upon the point.
