HC Deb 13 April 1899 vol 69 cc979-80
MR. HOGAN

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether any communications have passed between Her Majesty's Government and the Government of Western Australia in reference to recent outrages upon blacks in that colony; and, if so, with what results?

THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THUS COLONIES (Mr. J. CHAMBERLAIN,) Birmingham, W.

The only communications which have passed between Her Majesty's Government and the Government of Western Australia on the subject to which this Question refers, are a telegram which I received on the 1st April from the Governor of Western Australia, and which has been published in the newspapers, informing me that the two magistrates concerned in the case of cruelty to natives in that colony, which has been the subject of remarks in the English Press, have been struck off the Commission of the Peace, and a dispatch which I have addressed to the Governor expressing my satisfaction in receiving that information.
