HC Deb 13 April 1899 vol 69 c968
SIR J. LENG () Dundee

I beg to ask the First Commissioner of Works whether it is proposed to make the new Government Buildings in Whitehall, Parliament Street, South Kensington, and the Patent Office as far as possible fireproof; and whether tests will be made as to which is the best system, or will it be left to the architects employed to decide what system of fireproofing shall be adopted?

THE FIRST COMMISSIONER OF WORKS (Mr. AKERS DOUGLAS,) Kent, St. Augustine's

The answer to the first paragraph of the honourable Member's Question is in the affirmative. The architects, in conjunction with Sir John Taylor, will be instructed to consider what system or systems are best adapted to render the various buildings fireproof.
