HC Deb 10 April 1899 vol 69 c687
MR. ROUND (Essex, Harwich)

I beg to ask Mr. Chancellor of the Exchequer whether, on the introduction of the Budget, he will state the course the Government intend to take in order to give relief from the existing burden of local taxation to clerical incomes derived from tithe?

THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER (Sir MICHAEL HICKS -BEACH, Bristol, W.)

No, Sir. It would neither be usual nor practicable to make a statement on such a matter on the introduction of the Budget.

VISCOUNT CRANBORNE (Rochester)

Can the right honourable Gentleman say when the Government hope to make a statement on the subject in consequence of the pledge given earlier in the Session by the First Lord of the Treasury?

THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER

That does not rest with me.
