HC Deb 23 May 1898 vol 58 cc397-8
MR. J. DILLON

On behalf of the Member for South Kerry I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland whether he can state the number of deaths which have recently occurred in the Portmagee district from typhus and typhoid; and how many patients are at present in the Cahireiveen hospital suffering from these diseases, and to what cause the outbreak is attributed?

MR. GERALD BALFOUR

The clerk of the union states that there has been only one death recently from fever in the Portmagee dispensary district, and that there are two cases of fever at present in the union hospital from the Portmagee district, and three from the Emlagh district. The disease was introduced into the village in January last by a patient from Ballinskelligs, and other cases occurred owing, it is stated, to milk being supplied from the house in which the patient was under treatment. The necessary precautions have been taken to prevent the spread of the disease, and the medical inspector of the Local Government Board is now proceeding to the district to make further inquiries into the matter.
