HC Deb 17 May 1898 vol 57 c1554
MR. WEIR

I beg to ask the Lord Advocate if he can state in how many schools in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland Gaelic is taught during the ordinary school hours, either by the certificated teacher or by some person specially employed for the purpose?

MR. GRAHAM MURRAY

There are 25 schools in which Gaelic is taught as a specific subject, and 43 schools in which payment is made in respect of the employment of a Gaelic-speaking pupil-teacher. These numbers do not include all those where Gaelic is used as a medium of explanation, as to which no Return is possible.
