HC Deb 16 May 1898 vol 57 cc1382-3
MR. WEIR

I beg to ask the First Lord of the Treasury, in view of the fact that the last Return of persons assessed for poor rates (Scotland) shows that 6,504 persons entitled to vote for Parliamentary and county council elections for Ross and Cromarty have no vote for school board elections, will the Government support the Bill now before Parliament for extending the right to vote at school board elections in Scotland to all persons entitled to vote for the county council?

MR. GRAHAM MURRAY

The expediency of the change suggested in the honourable Member's Bill is a fair matter for consideration before the next triennial election, which will take place in 1900, but the Government does not think the subject one that can be dealt with in a Bill promoted by a private Member.

MR. WEIR

Having regard to the fact that the right honourable Gentleman gave a similar answer long before the last election, will he say if the Bill will be brought in before the next election?

MR. GRAHAM MURRAY

The matter will be considered before 1900. That is all the answer I can make.
