HC Deb 10 May 1898 vol 57 cc848-9
MR. SAMUEL SMITH (Flintshire)

I beg to ask the First Lord of the Treasury whether, in view of the occurrences which have recently taken place in St. Cuthbert's, Kensington, the Government will consider the expediency of appointing a Royal Commission to inquire into the subject, and to devise means for maintaining the Protestant constitution of the Church as defined by its articles and formularies?

THE FIRST LORD OF THE TREASURY (Mr. A. J. BALFOUR,) Manchester, E.

I cannot think it possible that the constitution of the Church as defined by its articles and formularies is in any danger.

MR. S. SMITH

I beg to give notice that in consequence of this reply I will move for a Royal Commission to inquire into the alarming growth of Romish doctrine and ritual in the Church of England.
