HC Deb 10 May 1898 vol 57 cc842-3
MR. LABOUCHERE

I beg to ask the First Commissioner of Works whether he has noticed that a high chimney in close vicinity to the Palace of Westminster emits at all hours of the day clouds of black smoke; and whether he will call the attention of the local authorities to this nuisance, with a view to its discontinuance?

THE FIRST COMMISSIONER OF WORKS (Mr. AKERS DOUGLAS,) Kent, St. Augustine's

Yes, Sir; I have noticed the black smoke from this chimney, and from many others elsewhere of late, but the nuisance is probably due to the impracticability of getting Welsh steam coal during the strike. In any case, however, I have no authority in the matter, and any representation on the subject should be addressed to the County Council.

MR. LABOUCHERE

Cannot the right honourable Gentleman, as representative of us as householders in the neighbourhood, make the representation?
