HC Deb 06 May 1898 vol 57 c534
MR. CARVELL WILLIAMS (Notts, Mansfield)

I beg to ask the Vice-President of the Committee of Council on Education whether, in cases in which it has been proposed to appropriate the grants under the Voluntary Schools Act to the payment of debts incurred before the passing of the Act, and which the Department considers to be illegal, such grants have been withheld; and, if not, what course has been adopted in regard to them?

MR. HANBURY (for Sir J. GORST)

In such cases the grant was not paid until the proposals of the Governing Body of the Association had been amended so as to bring them within the Act.
