I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many sentences of close confinement of 14 days were imposed upon prisoners during the year ended 31st March, 1897: and how many prisoners were thus punished once, how many twice, how many thrice, and so on?

Forty-one such sentences were imposed, 32 prisoners being sentenced once, three twice, and one three times.
