HC Deb 03 May 1898 vol 57 cc188-9
MR. O'KELLY (Roscommon, N.)

I wish to ask the First Lord of the Treasury whether the Government have received information that the house of the British Consul at Santiago de Cuba has been attacked by a Spanish mob, and, if so, what steps has been taken to secure this officer's protection?

THE FIRST LORD OF THE TREASURY

As far as I am aware no information of that character has been received at the Foreign Office.

MR. W. REDMOND (Clare, E.)

Can the right honourable Gentleman say whether it is true, as reported in the Press, that the Government have received official information respecting the engagement at Manila, and, if so, what is the nature of that information?

THE FIRST LORD OF THE TREASURY

I gave a general outline yesterday of the substance of the information we had received.

MR. W. REDMOND

Has no further information been received since?

THE FIRST LORD OF THE TREASURY

No, Sir; I think nothing.
