HC Deb 31 March 1898 vol 55 cc1473-4
COLONEL SIR HOWARD VINCENT (Sheffield, Central)

I beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for War if it is a fact that musketry practice with reduced charges has been stopped, even in cases where the ranges are unsuitable for the Lee-Metford full charge; and, in such event, what arrangements are proposed to compensate corps like the Nottinghamshire Volunteers, who have been put to expense in altering ranges for reduced charges, ammunition being promised to them as soon as the alterations were completed?

THE UNDER SECRETARY OF STATE FOR WAR (Mr. W. ST. JOHN BRODRICK,) Surrey, Guildford

The issue of cartridges with a reduced charge will be continued until the end of the financial year 1898–9. If the Nottingham Volunteers have incurred expense in altering ranges it has been without the knowledge of the general officer commanding the District.
