HC Deb 21 March 1898 vol 55 c401
MR. HENNIKER HEATON

I beg to ask the Secretary to the Treasury, as representing the Postmaster General, when the proposed conference to discuss Imperial postal rates will be held; and whether he has read the cable message from Australia to the effect that the Australasian Prime Ministers have decided not to introduce 2d. postage to England?

MR. HANBURY

It is proposed that the conference on postal rates within the British Empire shall be held next June. The Postmaster General is aware that, according to a telegram which appeared in the Times newspaper on the 14th of March, the Australian Prime Ministers have decided that they "could not advise a reduction of postage rates to Great Britain," which is not quite the same thing as my hon. Friend's statement; but he has received no such message from Australia himself.
