HC Deb 18 March 1898 vol 55 cc245-6
MR. J. DILLON (Mayo, E.)

On behalf of the hon. Member for South Monaghan (Mr. DALY), I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland whether an Irish National School teacher is eligible for election as a Poor Law Guardian; and whether there is any obstacle to an Irish National teacher sitting and voting as a Poor Law Guardian?

MR. GERALD BALFOUR

A National School teacher is not legally disqualified from holding the office of Poor Law Guardian, but the Commissioners of National Education consider that the functions of the latter office are inconsistent with the position and duties of a teacher under their rules and regulations.
