HC Deb 17 March 1898 vol 55 cc99-100
MR. J. WYNFORD PHILIPPS (Pembrokeshire)

I beg to ask the Vice-President of the Committee of Council on Education (1) whether the Education Department have decided to place the St. David's National School on the Annual Grant List; (2) whether the St. David's School Board has already supplied sufficient school accommodation; and (3) whether the Education Department has hitherto refused to give grants to new schools when sufficient accommodation already exists; and, if so, why the St. David's National School has been placed on the Annual Grant List?

SIR JOHN GORST

The answers to the first and second paragraphs are in the affirmative. Each case of application to be placed on the Annual Grant List is decided on its merits. The St. David's National School is not a new school, but has been maintained as a certified efficient school for upwards of 17 years and the Committee of Council are unable to say that it is unnecessary.

MR. WYNFORD PHILIPPS

May I ask the right hon. Gentleman if I am to understand that no complaints on the score of accommodation have been made by the St. David's School Board?

SIR JOHN GORST

No, Sir; none.
