HC Deb 11 March 1898 vol 54 cc1372-3
MR. E. H. PICKERSGILL (Bethnal Green, S.W.)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether, inasmuch as the present law respecting prisons (especially convict prisons) is spread over a large number of Acts, he will introduce a consolidating Bill containing the complete prison code as it exists at present, in accordance with the recommendation of the Prisons Committee, and with the special view of assisting the House in the consideration, of the pending Prisons Bill.

THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE HOME DEPARTMENT

It is my intention that the Bill amending the Prisons Acts now before the House should be followed by a consolidating Bill; but, with amendment in view, it seems to me that it would be labour wasted to consolidate the Acts as they at present stand.
