HC Deb 11 March 1898 vol 54 cc1364-5
MR. J. DILLON (Mayo, E.)

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland why the application of the Swinford Board of Guardians for a loan of £120 for enlarging Killanure graveyard, in the parish of Kiltimagh, has been refused?

THE CHIEF SECRETARY FOR IRELAND (Mr. GERALD W. BALFOUR,) Leeds, Central

An application for a loan of £233 (not £120, as stated in the Question), for the enlargement and enclosure of the burial ground at Killanure, was refused owing to the financial obligations of the Union. It has since been suggested that the unskilled labour in connection with the enclosure of the ground could be provided for as a relief work, and that, under such circumstances, a loan of £100 would be sufficient for the purchase of the land. Upon receiving from the Guardians an amended application for a loan of this latter amount the application will be recommended to the Treasury.
