§ MR. C. E. SCHWANN (Manchester, N.)I beg to ask the Secretary of State for India whether he can say what is the result of the recommendation which he is understood to have made in the summer of 1897 to the Government of India, in support of the establishment of a physi- 833 cal laboratory in that country for advanced scientific teaching and research; and, if so, what sum is to be allocated to that object, and when will the work be commenced?
§ THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR INDIAThe Government of India reported in a dispatch received last week that the initial outlay on a physical laboratory of the kind described would be 60,000 tens of rupees, and that they regretted, in the present state of the finances, to be unable to entertain so costly a scheme.
