HC Deb 03 March 1898 vol 54 c459
MR. W. E. M. TOMLINSON (Preston)

I beg to ask the Financial Secretary to the War Office whether, as appears from the Army List, there are now 20 battalions of Volunteer Artillery without quartermasters; and what is the cause of this deficiency?

THE UNDER SECRETARY OF STATE FOR WAR (Mr. W. ST. JOHN BRODRICK,) Surrey, Guildford

There are at present 20 vacancies for quartermasters of Volunteer corps, out of an establishment of 213. This is not a large proportion, and is caused by the non-arrival of recommendations by the Commanding Officers of suitable candidates for the appointment.
