HC Deb 03 March 1898 vol 54 c489
MR. D. H. COGHILL (Stoke-on-Trent)

I beg to ask the First Lord of the Treasury, whether the Government will be able this Session to include in their scheme of Local Government for Ireland the abolition of the office of Lord Lieutenant, and the substitution of a Secretaryship of State?

THE FIRST LORD OF THE TREASURY

I do not know whether it would be competent to include such a proposal in the Bill, I think probably not, but even if it were it would be travelling very far beyond the limits of local government, to carry out the suggestion of the hon. Member.
