HC Deb 21 June 1898 vol 59 cc962-3
MR. LEWIS

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for India whether a Press Committee has been established in Poona; whether the Vernacular and Anglo-Vernacular papers published at Poona have been asked to send copies to the Committee; and whether the Committee has any, and, if so, what power of censorship over such newspapers?

THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR INDIA

Under the existing law of India, no Committee which may have been appointed in Poona or elsewhere could have any power of censorship over the press. Its functions would necessarily be limited to keeping the responsible officials informed as to the character of the matter published in the newspapers.
