HC Deb 08 June 1898 vol 58 cc1000-1

Amendment proposed— At end, add— 'And when a district council propose to exercise such powers, the parish council, or, if there is no parish council, the parish meeting, of any parish wholly or partly situate in any such contributory places shall have consented thereto.'"—(Mr. Hanbury.)

THE FINANCIAL SECRETARY TO THE TREASURY (Mr. R. W. HANBURY,) Preston

The real reason for this Amendment is that there might be cases where a district council has parishes all running, say, noth and south, and in which northern parishes might be willing to guarantee the post office, whilst the southern parishes would derive no benefit, or very little, therefrom; and what we want to do is to see that these southern parishes shall not be called upon to contribute without their consent having been obtained.

Amendment agreed to.

Question put— That the clause as amended stand part of the Bill.
