HC Deb 07 June 1898 vol 58 cc875-6
MR. STEVENSON (Suffolk, Eye)

I beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether Her Majesty's Ambassador at Constantinople has been able to obtain from the Porte the repayment of the sum of £500 stolen from the late Tussuf Yunan?

MR. CURZON

A telegram has been received from Her Majesty's Chargé d'Affaires at Constantinople, stating that the Porte has returned an unfavourable reply to the application for repayment of the sum stolen from Yussuf Yunan. The dispatch recording this refusal, and the grounds for it, is on its way to London.

MR. STEVENSON

Can the right honourable Gentleman state whether any further steps will be taken with the object of recovering the money?

MR. CURZON

I cannot say until I have received the dispatch and made myself acquainted with the reasons for the step taken by the Turkish Government.
