HC Deb 29 July 1898 vol 63 cc444-5
MR. CHANNING

On behalf of the honourable Member for the Eye Division of Suffolk, I beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what steps have been taken by Her Majesty's Government to secure from the Sublime Porte an adequate sum as compensation to the widows and orphans of the two British postal officials who were murdered while on duty at Constantinople on the 26th of August, 1896; and whether the Government will make grants from, the Royal Bounty Fund to the widows, who for 23 months have been left dependent upon private charity?

MR. CURZON

Compensation from the Turkish Government has been claimed, and will be enforced, in the case referred to. The question of a grant from the Royal Bounty Fund is one for the consideration of the First Lord of the Treasury.
