MACALEESE (Monaghan, N.)I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland if, since the Government have not seen their way to insert a retrospective clause in the Local Government (Ireland) Bill to legalise compensation to those members of the Royal Irish Constabulary who were injured in the recent Belfast riots, and those of the same force who rendered special service in quelling the disturbances and bringing offenders to justice, he will ask Parliament for a special grant to compensate these most deserving officers?

It must be obvious to the honourable Member that his suggestion could not be 840 entertained without at the same time considering the cases of those members of the police force who were injured on the occasion of previous rioting not only in Belfast, but in Dublin.
