HC Deb 08 July 1898 vol 61 cc340-1
MR. J. ELLIS (Notts, Rushcliffe)

I beg to ask the Secretary to the Treasury what are the principal items making up the sum of £7,500 under the head of "Commissions not specifically provided for" of Vote 1, Class 7, Civil Service Estimates, Temporary Commissions?

MR. HANBURY

The provision of £7,500 in the Temporary Commissions Estimate under the head of "Commissions not specifically provided for," is not made up of definite items. It is intended to provide a margin on the Vote to meet the cost of new Commissions which may be appointed during the year; and also to cover any balance of expenditure which may fall into that year in respect of existing Commissions which, so far as can be foreseen when the Estimate is framed, are likely to be brought to a close before the commencement of the year. The total amount to be provided to meet these contingencies is determined by the experience of former years. Among Commissions which, contrary to expectation, have been prolonged into the present financial year are the Manual and Practical Instruction (Ireland) Commission, the Tuberculosis Commission, and the India Expenditure Commission. The new Commissions to be provided for include the Sewage Disposal and Intermediate Education (Ireland) Commissions.
