HC Deb 05 July 1898 vol 60 c1120
MR. DOUGHTY (Great Grimsby)

I beg to ask the President of the Board of Trade whether the Fisheries Department of the Board of Trade, formed some years ago when the fishing industry was much smaller and less important than at present, has been abolished; whether fishery business in future is to be discharged by the Harbour Department; and whether the chief and second official of this Department have any special knowledge or acquaintance with this business?

THE PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF TRADE

No, Sir, the Fisheries Department has not been abolished, but the Harbour Department has been merged in the Fisheries Department. I have recently appointed as chief inspector of fisheries a gentleman thoroughly experienced in fishery matters.
