HC Deb 28 February 1898 vol 54 c139
COLONEL SIR HOWARD VINCENT

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, whether the Spanish Government deported last year to this country a considerable number of anarchists, reported to be 28, and if the consent of Her Majesty's Government to receive these visitors was first sought or obtained; and if the expulsion to Great Britain of such persons by France, Germany, Belgium, Spain, and Italy is subject to any control by this country, as in the United States and elsewhere?

THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE HOME DEPARTMENT

A number of anarchists were deported last year by the Spanish Government, 28 of whom were placed by the Spanish authorities on a ship bound for Liverpool. Representations were in consequence made to the Spanish Government on the matter, and that Government has given an assurance that no more anarchists will be sent to this country without a previous understanding with Her Majesty's Government. There is no power to refuse admission into this country of persons expelled from other countries.
