HC Deb 25 February 1898 vol 54 c32
MR. E. CARSON (Dublin University)

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland whether his attention has been called to the judgments of the Court of Appeal in Ireland in the case of the Harkness site, in relation to the 40th section of the Land Law (Ireland) Act of 1896; and whether, having regard to the deadlock occasioned by the construction of the section, the Government propose to legislate this Session with a view to repealing this section, and avoiding the fruitless expense pointed out in the judgments of the Court of Appeal?

MR. GERALD BALFOUR

My attention has been called to the judgments of the Court of Appeal in Ireland in the case mentioned in the first paragraph. We do not apprehend a deadlock, and have no intention of repealing the section.
