HC Deb 25 February 1898 vol 54 cc26-7
SIR E. GOURLEY (Sunderland)

I beg to ask the First Lord of the Admiralty if he will favour the House with such information as he may possess regarding the double boat disaster off Wells in connection with the landing of stores for the Coastguard from the gunboat Alarm; whether he will institute an inquiry into the cause of the capsizing of the boat from the shore as well as of that from the Alarm; and will he also issue instructions that stores are only to be landed during daylight, and in favourable weather, unless under exceptional circumstances?

MR. MACARTNEY

The statements which appeared in the Press are substantially correct. An inquiry into the cause of the capsizing of the boat will be instituted as soon as possible. There is no necessity for adopting the suggestions in the third paragraph.
