FARRELLI beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland can he state the number of evictions that took place in Cavan county during the year 1897; the number of tenants re-instated as caretakers; and the number wholly dispossessed or turned into caretakers by Section 7 of the Land Act, 1887; and in how many cases the land was taken by others than the previous tenants?
§ MR. GERALD BALFOURThere were 34 evictions in the County Cavan during the year 1897. The number of ex-tenants re-instated as caretakers was 3, and as tenants 11, whilst 20 were wholly dispossessed. The number of tenants converted into caretakers by the service Notices under Section 7 of the Act of1887 was 192. I have no information as to the number of tenants who, having been served with such Notices, have since redeemed, and it would be quite contrary to practice to give the information desired by the concluding inquiry in the question as regards particular areas.
