HC Deb 15 February 1898 vol 53 cc636-7
MR. LLOYD MORGAN (Carmarthen, W.)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether the Governor and Matron of Her Majesty's Prison at Carmarthen are about to retire; and whether he will appoint as their successors persons who are able to speak the Welsh language?

THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE HOME DEPARTMENT

The answer to the first paragraph is in the affirmative. I am afraid I shall not be able to appoint a Welsh-speaking Governor, as there is no officer so qualified among those eligible for the promotion to the post. Efforts will be made to secure a Welsh-speaking Matron.
