HC Deb 14 February 1898 vol 53 cc469-70
SIR JAMES FERGUSSON (Manchester, N.E.)

I beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for War if he will grant a return of the marching out (field) strength of each battalion of British Infantry detailed for service in the recent operations on the North-West Frontier of India, specifying the reasons for the retention of the remainder in quarters?

THE UNDER SECRETARY OF STATE FOR WAR (Mr. W. ST. JOHN BRODRICK,) Surrey, Guildford

There is no objection to give this return if moved for; but the portion requiring the reason for retaining men in quarters can only be obtained by reference to India.
