TULLYI beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland whether he can state the names of the Local Government Board auditors who were responsible for auditing the 236 accounts of the late Clerk of the Westport Union while the frauds were taking place, which have been discovered at a recent Local Government Board inquiry, and what steps have been taken to ensure that similar frauds cannot take place with impunity in future?
THE CHIEF SECRETARYThe auditor of the Westport Union during the time that the forgeries referred to were committed was Colonel O'Hara, who has since retired under the age clause. The Local Government Board have issued a circular of instructions to the Guardians, which, if duly carried out, will ensure that similar frauds cannot be perpetrated in future.
