HC Deb 02 August 1898 vol 63 cc862-3
DR. TANNER

I beg to ask the First Commissioner of Works why the general public were, on Saturday last, the 30th July, excluded from every part of the Palace of Westminster except Westminster Hall; if this was done in consequence of a Saturday sitting in the House of Commons; and why portions of the Houses of Parliament not being used last Saturday were closed against the public on the eve of a general holiday, when many people come to London from great distances?

MR. AKERS DOUGLAS

The public were excluded from the Houses of Parliament on Saturday by order of the Lord Great Chamberlain, acting on the standing regulations approved in 1888, which prescribe that if there should be a Saturday sitting in either House the Palace is to be closed to the public altogether on that day.
