HC Deb 02 August 1898 vol 63 cc867-8
MR. LOUGH

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether, seeing that the Brussels Sugar Conference has not been able to arrive at an unanimous decision, but that some hope was held out that the two countries which have refused to enter into any agreement as to the abolition of bounties might yield subsequently to diplomatic efforts, it is the intention of the Government to proceed further with the promised grants or legislation for the West Indies this Session?

THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE COLONIES

It is the intention of the Government to propose certain further grants for certain West Indian colonies. The proposed grants are independent of any arrangements that may be hereafter arrived at at the Brussels Conference.
