HC Deb 21 April 1898 vol 56 c642
MR. J. O'KELLY (Roscommon, N.)

I beg to ask the Secretary for the Colonies whether a communication has been received from the Transvaal Government denying the existence of Her Majesty's suzerainty over that Republic; and, if so, when that communication will be laid before Parliament?

SIR ELLIS ASHMEAD-BARTLETT (Sheffield, Ecclesall)

At the same time I will ask the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he has received a dispatch from President Kruger declining to recognise the Queen's suzerainty over the Transvaal; and, if so, whether he can inform the House as to the tenor of the reply of Her Majesty's Government.

THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE COLONIES (Mr. J. CHAMBERLAIN,) Birmingham, W.

The answer is in the negative. No such communication has been received by Her Majesty's Government.
