HC Deb 05 April 1898 vol 56 cc204-5
MR. THOMAS BAYLEY (Derbyshire, Chesterfield)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether any communications have taken place between the Colonial Office and the Chartered Company of South Africa, or any person representing the Company, in regard to the election of directors to the vacancies on the Board of the Company; and whether, if so, the question of the election of any persons connected with the Jameson Raid, or with the preparations thereto, has been under discussion?

THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE COLONIES

On February 15th Lord Grey inquired whether, under the new regulations, the sole responsibility for the choice of directors was left to the shareholders. The answer was in the affirmative. I do not know whether the inquiry was made on behalf of the Chartered Company, or was purely personal, and no other communications of any kind have passed on the subject.
