HC Deb 04 April 1898 vol 56 c40
MR. WILLIAM JOHNSTON

I beg to ask Mr. Chancellor of the Exchequer if his attention has been called to the splendid results of the social work of the Salvation Army in reclaiming criminals and reducing the statistics of pauperism; and whether, having now an unprecedented surplus from the Revenue Returns, he will consider the desirability, either by a donation of £50,000 or an annual grant of £10,000 to the funds of the Salvation Army Social Scheme, of aiding, as the Australasian Colonies all do, in this work?

THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER

I fear I cannot see my way to do as the hon. Member suggests, neither do I think the Salvation Army ask for it.
